Water neutral for Socially responsible travellers
To demonstrate the concept's viability post the 2002 Johannesburg World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD), Water Neutral has developed the water neutral calculator.
This science based individual water footprint calculator quantifies the volumes of water used to produce goods that are utilised by a traveller/tourist visiting Southern Africa on a daily basis whilst on holiday. The calculator is linked to a tool that calculates the offset price necessary for each unit of water footprint. The funds raised via the 'Water Neutral' concept are channelled to initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable water management practices within a watershed, such as the Rainwater Harvesting Tanks, the Emvelo Skywater Initiative and the Play Pump Initiative that provide easy access to clean drinking water and leads to improvements in health, education and economic development.
