Today, the Internet enables 'virtual communities' to develop global thinking, linking people around the world who share similar interests, values and objectives. The ability to interact with like-minded individuals instantaneously from anywhere in the world has considerable benefits. Online communities not only provide users with vast knowledge-sharing resources, but encourage social interaction, debate and action.

Water Neutral have created several online community areas where social interaction and exchange can take place between responsible travellers planning to visit Southern Africa. It is envisaged that through these associated forum links and communities, prospective travellers to Southern Africa may:
  • establish key community and tourism contacts in a particular region;
  • understand the negative impacts of water consumption in the local region;
  • learn of basic water saving techniques to reduce their water footprint on their travels; and
  • develop an understanding of how reducing ones water footprint can contribute to the sustainable and equitable water use in Southern Africa.

Water Neutral is not only about raising awareness and generating funds for the sustainable and fair use of freshwater, but stimulating debate and action to proactively reduce the footprint that one presses on the water resources when visiting Southern Africa.

To demonstrate the concept's viability post WSSD, water neutral has developed the water neutral calculator; this is a science based individual water footprint calculator which quantifies the volumes of water used to produce goods by a traveller/tourist visiting Southern Africa on a daily basis whilst on holiday or business.
